Welcome to NFHS Rules Discussion

Post by SGT on Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:56 am

Recently an IHSA state semifinal football game was decided by a blown call (due to the officiating crew misapplying a penalty). Judgment mistakes by new and veteran officials will occur during games and most coaches tolerate these mistakes as "part of the game". However, misapplying the rules or not knowing the rules is a circumstance any official should avoid. Not only does it make an official look bad, but it will make an entire crew look bad if rules are not applied properly.

The high school football season lasts only 3-4 months. As officials, we need to continue to discuss the rules throughout the off-season to better prepare ourselves for when the games are played. The intent of this community is to carry on discussion throughout the year.

If we are able to get at least one post per day discussing/explaining a rule, a definition, a fundamental or quiz question we will all benefit. Discussion of even the basic rules may seem non-beneficial for veteran officials but many newer officials could benefit from the discussion. I invite everyone who has joined this community to get involved; even if you are presenting a topic/question word for word from the rule or case book.

The floor is open to all of you to create or reply to the discussion. Thanks in advance to all who participate!

Thanks for joining, counting on your input. This will be an easier format than firing emails back and forth. I'm a novice at setting this site up, so it's not full of bells and whistles and it's not fancy. But it should serve us well.
